- Gokyo Trek
Trip Overview:
With its enticing side glens, a string of turquoise lakes, Nepal’s biggest glacier and an arc of snow mountains, the Gokyo valley is the most attractive in the Khumbu Region. Our Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek is an alternative to classical treks in Khumbu that has been specially designed for travelers who are eager to experience the magnificence of the Everest range, while avoiding too much mental and physical stress. The view from Gokyo is exceptionally beautiful and offers more of the legendary mountain than the views from Kalapattar.
Introduction
The trail of this trek follows the Everest Base camp route up to Sanasa, and then the follows Dudh Koshi River to its source, Ngozumpa Glacier. After a brief sightseeing in Kathmandu, we fly to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), from where we will proceed to Phakding. The next and more scenic day will be spent trekking up to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,286ft). The subsequent days we will pass through Phortse Village and Machhermo where the mountains are more spectacular. Passing through these villages, we also get a chance to have a look at the lifestyles of high altitude dwellers. We reach Gokyo enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Ngozumba Glacier, the largest of its kind in the Nepal Himalayas. The small herding settlement of Gokyo (4,750m/15,584ft) lies on the banks of the third lake in a series of small turquoise mountain lakes. On ridge above Gokyo the four peaks above 8,000m (26,246ft), Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, expose themselves. If that is not enough have a look at the tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung (7,922m/25,991ft), considered one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Khumbu region. There are many options for additional exploration and high-altitude walking, including the crossing of Cho La, a 5,420m (17,782ft)-high pass into Khumbu and a hike to Gokyo Ri (5357m/19,216ft). The descent is made through Dole to Lukla to resume a fly back to Kathmandu.
Activities: Trekking and Hiking
Meals: Breakfast in Kathmandu and all meals during the trek
Transportation: Domestic flight and private vehicles

Rest day / Sightseeing (Boudha, Pashupatinath and Swambunath)
Kathmandu – Lukla – Phakding
This is an hour flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport (2,840m). The trail from Lukla, leads north from the airstrip and drops steeply for a bit, then descends gently to Phakding (2,610m), your first overnight stop. This is a two hour trek.
Phakding – Namche
From Phakding the trail continues north up the Dudh Kosi Valley. (Kosi means river in Nepali and it comes down from the Everest glacier). All along this part of the trail, there is a magnificent forest of magnolia, rhododendron and giant firs. On the cliffs above the river it is possible to see musk deer and Himalayan tahr. At Monjo the trek enters the Sagarmatha National Park. The trail follows the river and crosses Dudh Kosi and makes a steep climb to Namche (3,440m). Namche is a very colourful Sherpa village where you will see vendors selling antiques and each Saturday there is an important weekly haat or market.
Namche
We stay one more extra day at Namche for acclimatization. This will allow our bodies to become acclimatised to the altitude of 3,440m (11,300ft). We’ll see local sights and visit the village of Khumjung where there is a school built by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Himalayan Trust. The views of Amadablam, Thamserku and Tawache are really breathtaking. Khumjung’s elevation is 3,790m.
Namche – Dole
Dole 4,110m is another 6 hour trek from Namche. The trail passes through many Kharkas, summer settlements used when Sherpas bring herds of yaks to graze in these high pastures. The views of Khumbila and Tawachee (6,542m) are tremendous throughout the day.
Dole – Machhermo
From Dole the trail climbs to Lharbama at 4,220m and luza at 4,360m. The trail is steep in most places as it climbs through junipers to Lhabarma. The trail continues to climb along the side of the valley, high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to Machhermo at 4,410m.
Machhermo – Gokyo 4,750m
Beyond Machhermo the trail climbs a ridge for an excellent view both down the valley to Kantega and up towards Cho Oyu (8,153m). Beyond the ridge, the valley widens as the trail reaches Panka. The trail descends to the river bank before beginning the climb on to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. It is a steep climb up the moraine, switch backing alongside the stream to the first lake at 4,650m. The trail now becomes almost level as it follows the valley past a second lake, known as Longponga, at 4,690m and finally up a boulder strewn path to Gokyo at 4,750m.
Gokyo
The views in the Gokyo region are tremendous. For the best view, we climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m). It is a two hour climb to the top of the peak, providing a panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Gyachung kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and Tawachee.
