Introduction to Ama Dablam Expedition

Ama Dablam Expedition is one of the most popular expedition choices for mountain enthusiasts visiting Nepal. Ama Dablam is a mountain in the Himalayan range of eastern Nepal, conveniently located almost due south of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse in the Khumbu region. The literal meaning of the word ‘Ama Dablam’ is “Mother’s necklace”, which refers to the form the mountain takes as it stands majestically. It so happens that the long ridges of the peak extend on each side like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the sloping glacier that hangs along the slope is referred to as a ‘Dablam’, a traditional double-pendant with pictures of the gods that is worn by sherpa women.

Even though the name has a soft ring to it, Ama Dablam packs a lot of rough terrain for trekkers and mountain climbers alike. The mountain is a steep pyramid of ice with vertical walls and sharp exposed ridges. The main peak is 6812 meters and the lower western peak is 6170 meters. Ama Dablam is also known as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas” due to its intense features and similarity in terrain with that of the Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland.

Overview of Ama Dablam Expedition

Mount Ama Dablam is a beautiful mountain, located almost due south of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse in the Khumbu region. It is a steep pyramid of ice with vertical walls and sharp, exposed ridges. Mount Ama Dablam forms a lasting impression on many trekkers in Nepal, as it is perhaps the most stunning mountain along the popular trekking route to Everest Base Camp. Despite the intensity of the path leading to Ama Dablam, it still stands out as one of the most famous and beautiful peaks in the world.

Ama Dablam stands proudly, rising above the Dudh Koshi river valley and stands on the way to the Everest Base camp, Nepal. However, it should be clear to everyone that, even with all the scenic beauty and gorgeous landscapes surrounding Ama Dablam, this expedition is a massive combination of a rough terrain trek as well as a strenuous climb. Therefore Ama Dablam expedition requires skilled rock climbing and ice climbing skills, with sufficient acclimatization at high altitudes and know-how of technical equipment.

Initiation of Ama Dablam Expedition

Ama Dablam is the third most popular Himalayan peak for permitted expeditions. The most popular route by far is the Southwest Ridge. Climbers normally set up three camps along the ridge while making their ascent to the Ama Dablam peak. Any ice that calves off the glacier typically goes left, away from the camp. Our ascent will be made via the SW ridge route, a technical route with three camps above base camp. The climb is usually completed in less than four weeks. The climbing on the route involves pure rock climbing on exquisite granite followed by mixed snow and rock climbing.

The last section to the summit involves ice climbing followed by a long steep snow slope up to the summit. Your expedition of Ama Dablam will be conducted in such a way that you get enough time to acclimatize to the weather and mountain environment so that you don’t face any difficulty at this altitude. The acclimatization session will be held at Namche Bazaar and you will be amongst the most friendly people on earth. Another rest and acclimatization session will be held at Dingboche which is near the Ama Dablam Base camp.

The Best time to visit Ama Dablam

Weather is an unpredictable element of nature. And weather is subject to change without prior indications. That being said, we can only give the weather report based on what is likely to happen every year. If there are any exceptions then we will seek an alternative.

The expedition can be taken any time of the year except for monsoons and winter. Monsoons because of the rain and winter because of the cold. The expedition during monsoons can be very gruesome. The trail is muddy, and the views are blurry. And walking in the rain while walking uphill can be a dangerous task. Climbing is also risky during monsoons.

Winter is another season we don’t recommend. At this altitude, there’s bound to be snow during winters. The views are fogged out and the trail can be very slippery. Not to forget the weather which reaches freezing point even during the daytime. The snow can make it unbearable to walk on the path too. There are chances that many lodges at higher altitudes to be closed due to snow.

Thus the best time we recommend is Spring and Autumn. Spring (March to May) may probably the best time for a trip to the mountains. The wind is warm and the views are spectacular. You can enjoy the greenery around you and the smell of freshness all around. The rhododendron forest will be bustling with beautiful flowers. Birds will make your trek a musical experience as well.

Autumn (September to November) is also another good time to take this expedition. The monsoon washes away all the dirt and dust and leaves a clean path. The views are clearer and the breeze might just be getting a bit cool as you make your way. There is a chance we can come across some animals of the mountains at this time. You may also need extra days for acclimatization but it will be a peaceful journey no doubt.
