Trekking always being my hobby and trek in the Himalayas gives you to experience the shivering cold and windy weather as well you can witness the height. So, as for me, like to trek in a different region and experience different thing that will remain for a lifetime.
Today, I want to share my blog where I was a trek in cool and semi-arid climate of Mustang and I hope you like it and also help you to plan your trek in Mustang Nepal.
From where trekking journey starts?
Firstly, I got received at Kathmandu airport, by the travel agency representative and I was taken to the hotel at Thamel and get some rest in hotel rooms. The hotel rooms are spacious and simply designed. The Night was good at the hotel.
The next day, we were taken for a sightseeing of Kathmandu city and the city has beautiful tourist places like Boudha temple, Pashupatinath temple is the quite famous one and these temples are made up with amazing architectural work. Then back to hotel room and rest and started preparation for the trek.
Next morning, we had a 7 member in a team including me and we fly to Pokhara, one of the famous tourist’s places in Nepal and it is the 2nd largest city in Nepal after Kathmandu.
Pokhara, the gateway to the Himalayas and offers plenty of individual entertainment for the families and kids. In City, you can experience the several adventure activities like trekking, paragliding, pony riding and boating in one of the beautiful lakes in Pokhara where you can relax and witness the amazing view of Himalayas at the background. Most of the Trekkers and hikers made this city as their first stop.
I had a lovely moment in Pokhara where I really enjoyed boating over the magnificent lake and the view from the Buddhist peace pagoda is just outstanding and it feels like to stay longer in the city. After that one night stay at the Pokhara Hotel. Next morning our trekking journey starts from Pokhara to Jomsom by air.
Pokhara to Jomsom(2800 meters)
Arrived at Jomsom airport which lies in the western edge of Jomsom within the river valley of Gandaki River. It is the point where our trekking journey finally started and from where we trek to Kagbeni. The main inhabited of the place is Thakali people. Jomsom is also the Headquarter of Mustang district. Jomsom is accessible road and flight from Pokhara. We found so many trekkers in Jomsom who were a trek to Lo-Manthang like us. Also met many trekkers finished their trekking and fly to Pokhara.
Jomsom to Kagbeni
This is our first day of trekking to Kagbeni and I was very excited about trekking. Kagbeni lies at an elevation of about 2850 meters above sea level. The trekking trail was little rough landscapes and dusty but instead of that, offering the scenic views of the Himalayas. After trudging we reached our destination and stay in our hotel booked by our agency.
Kagbeni “the gateway to upper mustang” a beautiful village sits on the laps of the Muktinath Valleys and the town is covered by abandoned settlements and irrigation fields. Kagbeni is the turning point to the Muktinath temple
Kagbeni to Chele
This is the second day and we walk forward to chele, a beautiful village settled at an elevation at 30350 meters and 7 hours work from Kagbeni. We walked along the Gandaki River and we experience the cold wind blowing. The view we can witnessed was just outstanding.
Chele to Geling
In the morning we left the chele village and walk towards Geling our next destination to reached the lo Manthang(Mustang). Geling the unique village tucked at an elevation of about 3,750 meters above sea level and approximately takes 5 to 6 hours. Trudging in the rough and dusty landscapes we finally reach Geling and we take some rest and stay in our guide recommended the hotel.
Geling to Tsarang
We all packed our bags and hike further to Tsarang, lie at an altitude of about 3,070 meters and takes 5 to 6 hours to reach. WE have crossed the dusty and eroded valleys ways and also passed the world largest “mani stone”, ancient monasteries with a mind-blowing view of mountains. After, so many struggle and patience we finally reached the beautiful and alluring village “Tsarang”.
Tsarang to Lo Manthang
As we were trekking, an elevation is also increasing and the height of Lo Manthang is about 3810 meter above sea level. And from Tsarang 4 to 5 hours walk to reach the Lo Manthang. As we were climbing my excitement is growing to witness the walled city. The trekking trail is not so much difficult for us to reached Lo Manthang.
Mustang has quite similar topography and culture of Tibet. The upper Mustang became the most popular trekking destination in Nepal and offers amazing surprises. The region was prohibited for the foreigners until 2006 but now it is open for foreigner but they have to take permission from the authority. Mustang lies in the rain shadow area that’s making possible to trek in monsoon as well where another region is under the influence of rain. The best time to trek in this hidden Kingdom from March to November. The winter season is not suitable for trekking because due to heavy snowfall making the route impossible.
In the morning we left to explore the “forbidden kingdom” I had the feeling of drowning in the ancient and cultural beauty of the region. The region has small and Narrow Street in both side walled houses is dotted. We explored the stunning temples, monasteries, caves and scattered fort etc makes the Mustang full of surprises. I really enjoyed and got experienced with Tibetan culture as to be in Nepal.
I found myself so lucky that time was the celebration of their popular “Tiji festival” and it will be celebrated for three days during spring time. This festival is celebrated because it got some mythological story behind this festive celebration where they believed that Deity Dorjee Jhomo who fought with demons to protect the Mustang Valley.
The people of Mustang also invited us to participate in their festive celebration and we also went to experience the culture of the Lo Manthang. The celebration was started by the monks and then the masked men dressed like demons and deities dancing and swords dance which gave us a new experience to trek in cool and semi-arid climate of Mustang.
Next morning, we drove to Jomsom and fly from Jomsom to Kathmandu, overall it was a nice trekking experience in Mustang. And I have loved each and everything of this trek and I also liked to thanks our skillful guide.
So, this is the complete guide which I have prepared so that it will be helpful for you to plan your trek in Mustang with fewer problems. If you have any queries then you also leave your comment below.
