Trip Overview

Chitwan National Park was declared a UNESCO Natural Heritage in 1979. This park is situated in central Nepal, covering 932 sq. km of deciduous forests overlooking the flood plains of the Narayani, Rapti and Reu rivers. The park headquarters at Kasara is 21 km drive from Bharatpur, which is 20 minutes by air or 146 km by road from Kathmandu.

Chitwan National Park offers a wilderness with a rich ecosystem that includes mammals, birds, reptiles and water animals of several kinds. The main features of this park are the one-horned Rhinos and the Royal Bengal Tigers that live in the dense forests of the park. One will also find crocodiles, pythons, deers, brilliantly coloured birds, and if fortunate, tigers. There are also rhesus monkeys, grey langur, leopards and other wild cats.

Another striking feature that adds to the Chitwan experience is the colourful Tharu people with their culture, tradition and Tharu dance.

The activities in the safari include: Elephant back ride, jeep safari, canoe ride, nature / jungle walk, etc.

Accommodation

Our accommodation partners in Chitwan are Chitwan Safari Camp and Lodge, recommended by TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet and established for many years. The lodge is known for its setting among relaxing luxuriant gardens with bungalow style rooms in the grounds. The attentive staff will do everything to make sure your stay is a successful one – ask for anything you like during your stay.

The atmosphere in Chitwan Safari Camp and Lodge is relaxed, and after a day of wildlife watching you can sit around the barbecue and enjoy the outdoor life even more.

The best seasons to visit Chitwan are when it’s not too hot – prime season is September to November, and March/April. It is also possible to go in winter, although it can be chilly – but nothing like the mountains! So December, January and February will still be good times to visit. Avoid May to August – the heat and monsoon make it a tough destination in the summer, although a visit is possible. During this season the jeep safaris don’t go into the national park, but visit the 20,000 Lakes area.
